For those who might visit this city, here’s my experience on some of Niigata’s Pink Salons. Those I have visited are just close to Niigata’s central station. All of them are Gaijin-friendly. Tobita-Shinchi is rarely old-fashioned red-light district in Osaka. A success report from a reader of the SUKEBE site

I tried Tobita Shinchi in Osaka. Very interesting. I estimate there are about 50 or so houses. It seemed the louder the bark, the less attractive the girl. The girls ranged from very young to maybe 40. Almost all looked Japanese. I would say most are average looking, a couple 8’s and one who could be an actress in a Japanese daily soap opera (a 91/2 or 10). The latter was quickly picked whenever I walked by. No matter, just wait twenty minutes and she will be available again. When you accept their invitation, you remove your shoes and are directed upstairs. You are escorted into a very small room with a futon, small table and lamp. A damp towel is offered and prices quoted. The two places I visited were 10,000 en for 15 minutes, 20,000 en for 30 minutes 40,000 en for 60 minutes. After taking your money and returning, she quickly gets down to business. Removes her clothes, instructs you to do same, and, well you know what happens next. They try to accommodate you as best they can. I tried to be as courteous as possible and there were no problems whatsoever. I told them I was not a nihonjin (Japanese), but this didn’t bother either. Everything is covered. It’s pretty business-like. This was not a depressing hooker scene in America or some other country. As one would expect in Japan, everything is orderly, decently clean, and sanitary.

Safe sex is easily available to foreign visitors to Osaka (gaijin) in April, 2010, even those who speak no Japanese. Osaka’s Tobita Shinchi brothel district is alive and well in 2010. Although this neighborhood is described as lower working class (and probably is), I felt completely safe there on a Saturday afternoon just before dusk.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Open double sliding doorways line the sidewalks on both sides. Over each doorway hangs a paper lantern. Inside in plain sight are a mama-san, and an often beautiful young woman. There are a few older or plump women too. Well-dressed, affluent-looking young men were walking up and down, wearing suits and nice clothes. Some clients were also trolling the area in taxis or cars (but the streets are narrow with little traffic). Although in the adjacent shopping arcade and streets outside the brothel area, there are a few homeless or drunks, there were none in the brothel area. There is a police station on the corner of this area. I saw uniformed and helmeted men with clipboards (police? not sure) walking past the brothels and talking with the proprietors. Everything was clean, orderly, and pleasant.

HOW TO GET GAIJIN SERVICE: I am an overweight white male from the USA who looks 60-ish but am older. I was wearing blue jeans and a fleece jacket, and felt a little under-dressed. As I walked by each shop and smiled and nodded my head, about two-thirds of the time the women did not respond or looked away. I took these to be the gaijin unfriendly places. The seated mama-san looked perplexed but the seated young lady began saying a few words in English, while giving me a brilliant smile. Not being rebuffed, I stepped just inside the threshold. I handed the young lady a piece of paper and a pen, and she said Thank You!

PRICES: She wrote “20 1,600” (20 minutes for about US $170). I wrote “30 min ?” and she added “21,000” (about $225). I said OK. (Later I saw signs: each additional 15 minutes is $110, so $330 for 45 min, and $440 for one hour. Prices don’t seem to have changed in the past decade.) She motioned me to ascend the stairs, after I removed my shoes.

SERVICE: At the top of the stairs, she invited me to use the toilet (yay! I needed to; there are also clean safe toilets in the train stations). The bathroom was spotless and odorless with toilet, urinal, and sink. From outside the bathroom (where she waited, just a curtain in the door) she handed me a moist washcloth. I had showered just before coming. I wiped my hands and down under. She told me to go into room #3. (Evidently there may be more than one lady working in a shop, rotating? I never saw more than one in the open door though, and often the young lady’s seat was empty, evidently because she had been selected.) The room was small and clean. On one side was a low table with cushions on each side. The young lady offered me iced tea and a cookie. I took off my clothes. She hung them up. On the other side was a futon and pillow. The only slightly grungy/worn things in the place were the towels laid over the futon and pillow. She stripped and wiped her privates conspicuously, then mine. I am a little larger than average and brought my own (Okamoto Mega Big Boy, black box with red print and photo of elephant, available in larger drug stores). HOW TO GET THERE: Take a train to the Dobutsuen Mae station on the Midosuji line. Osaka train stations and routes are listed in wikipedia. If the Midosuji line is not convenient, take a train to a major downtown transfer point such as Namba or Umeda, transfer to the Midosuji line, and go South. Dobutsuen Mae is station N22, and is 2 stations south of Namba (Nanba). To buy a train ticket, first look up the price for the ride to your destination. This will be on the huge route map over the ticket machines, which is usually labeled in English as well as Japanese (but not always). Put money in the machine first. Prices will appear. Touch the correct price, and your ticket will be printed and change delivered. If any problem, don’t hesitate to ask the person in the booth at the ticket gates. They are always polite and helpful. It does help to have your destination (and home station!) written down in Japanese to carry with you. Don’t forget to take your ticket from the entrance gate as you pass through — you’ll need it on the way out!

The brothel district is about three square blocks, and is just inside a turn from South to West of the major elevated highway that runs over this area. At maps.google.com, look up “Tobita, Osaka, Japan”, and see also the map here at https://www.21orover.com/japan/nws/Tobita/ Look for exit #2 when you arrive at Dobutsuen Mae station. As you come up onto the street, you’ll see a major highway elevated straight ahead, and a covered shopping arcade immediately on your right as you come out of exit #2. Enter the shopping arcade and walk straight ahead. Keep well to the left to avoid being run over by bicycles. After several blocks (about 10 min) the shopping arcade ends, just where the elevated highway turns. The brothel district is inside the “elbow” of the highway turn, a bit to your left and back up the way you came on the other side of the highway. Or you can take the last covered left turn inside the shopping arcade and it comes out on the NorthWest edge of the brothel district. Look for narrow streets with many open doors and a paper lantern hanging over each door.

4) The Izumizaki Crossing is a 4-corner pedestrian overpass crosswalk. I saw a number of these overpass crosswalks while driving in to Naha City, so keep you’re eyes peeled. If you’re heading South on Route 58 from Kadena, look for a ‘Hitachi’ and then ‘Toshiba’ sign on top of buildings to your left (Maejima area). You’re getting close, stay in right lane. A ‘Panasonic’ sign on top of a building will soon come up on your right. On your left, look for an overhead rail station; I believe it’s called ‘Asahibashi Station’. Route 58 makes a slight bend to the right just prior to the intersection; keep in the right lane. You’ll need to make a right turn at that intersection, taking the left fork in the road. If you’re heading North on Route 58 from Naha Airport direction, look for the overhead rail station on your right (Asahibashi Station, please correct if I’m wrong). You’ll need to turn left at the next intersection (look for the 4-corner pedestrian overpass). Whether you turn left or right, you’ll be headed down a 2-lane road towards the Pacific Hotel.

5) On page 3 of the JNTO map (Naha; see above URL), the Pacific Hotel is represented by the boxed #4 on the far left of the Naha map. The soapland neighborhood I drove through was the city block to the right of the boxed #4, left of the words “Izumizaki Crossing” and down-left of the circled #1. This may sound like gibberish, but refer to the map and you can probably decipher what I’m saying.

6) After driving down the 2-lane road 2-3 minutes, I saw the Pacific Hotel. I made a U-turn in the front door area of the hotel. I passed through the traffic light (heading back towards Route 58 direction), made my first left past the bookstore warehouse located on the left. I started to drive in to the area I assumed was soapland neighborhood. I was soon hailed and flagged by a number of young bouncer guys and obaa-sans (elderly ladies) sitting on folding chairs outside of each of their respective establishments. I surmised I was in the correct area of town (Okinawa soaplands).

7) I didn’t stop or visit any of the places. Not sure where you can park if you have a car. Either case, I went in broad daylight (approx. 13:00 on a Friday) and was obviously being enticed to enter (I’m a gaijin, so I assume everyone waving at me would welcome foreigners to their establishment). Maybe you can pay for parking at Pacific Hotel and take a stroll through the neighborhood. If you walk back towards Route 58 from the Pacific Hotel about 1 minute, turn left down the first 1-2 side streets, walk another 1-2 blocks, you’ll know you’ve hit the soapland places if you get approached by front door greeters.

If you refer to the map in the following URL, the Naha soapland area is located in the Tsuji district. My previous post has a pic of the Pacific Hotel (PH). The map in the URL shows where the hotel is located; the Tsuji district is right of the PH. For reference, I would say the ‘Steak House’ marker diagonal of the PH would be the outer-limit of the soapland area. Tsuji area is walk-able from the PH.

In the map in the second URL below, the Naha soapland area is located in the Tsuji district. My previous post has a pic of the Pacific Hotel (PH). The map in both URLs show where the hotel is located; the Tsuji district is right of the PH. For reference, I would say the ‘Steak House’ marker diagonal of the PH would be the outer-limit of the soapland area. Tsuji area is walkable from the PH.

The first URL shows a map (in Japanese) with the location of Naha Music (aka The Stage). Naha Music is marked as the red dot to the right of red dot symbolizing the Sun Sea Hotel. Naha Map
OK, OK…. I know I’m probably overdoing it with the map stuff, but here’s one more map I put together. Attached is map showing Matsuyama & Tsuji areas. Soapland & love hotel areas highlighted, as well as an adult video store (for those so inclined). Standard landmarks also highlighted (Pacific Hotel, Izumizaki Intersection).

Also attached is some info on the Pops adult video store (another map (Nihongo) and photo of store-front). Easier to find the video store when coming from Wakasa area on Route 43 than from Tsuji direction. Store is on a corner and comes up on you fast if not paying attention. Parking is basically on the alley to the side, none to be found on Rte 43.

This Soapland has put up their own website recently. Again, website only in Nihongo but I’m positive they will accept foreigners and non-Nihongo speakers if you can find it. There is also a decent map on the website.

In the Matsumato area, check out a Lawson and look for a small magazine called ‘Access’. It’s filled with clubs and soap advertisements (Japanese, but some with web sites given).

NaHa Music (The Stage) and if still there. All the girls working there were white and spoke Spanish. I think one of the girls said she was from Chile. It was $30 to get in the door. Once in there would be one girl on the stage at a time. The girl would dance for one song. The second song she would let the people sitting at the stage touch her tits after wiping your hands with a wet wipe. Then she would go back stage.
